Alopecia Totalis

Definition

Alopecia Totalis is the condition where a person looses complete hair of the scalp. It is an auto-immune disorder. Another auto-immune disorder is Alopecia Areata wherein the chemicals are released from ‘cytokines’ which are the lymphocytes existing around the follicles of hair. This situation rejects hair for the reasons which are unknown. Alopecia Totalis are seen appearing in two types: In some cases of Alopecia Totalis sudden hair fall is noticed with complete baldness of the head. While in other case, the patient undergoes the slower hair fall going through the condition of Alopecia Areata which is hair loss leading to single or multiple patches and then further developing into Alopecia Totalis. Alopecia Totalis affects people from all age groups but mainly from age group below 40years. Children and young adults are the most common sufferers of this condition.
