Definition

The condition of constipation can be perfectly defined as: Irregular bowel movements maybe 3times or lesser than that in a week Defecation problem – subjective feeling of hard stools or straining during bowel movements more than 25% of times Feeling that the bowel evacuation is left incomplete.

Symptoms

The causes of constipation can be traced to the following reasons: • Diet: One of the major reasons constituting the condition of constipation can be diet in most cases. Less liquid intake, low fiber diet or even dieting may lead to the infrequent bowel movements. • Primary: The constipation symptoms continuing for more than 6months is known as functional or primary constipation. Underlying medical condition or side effects from medication cannot be traced as the cause for primary constipation. It is the constipation’s most common cause which doesn’t accompanies abdominal pain and so is differentiated from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). • Metabolic and muscular: The endocrine and metabolic problems leading to the condition of constipation includes: diabetes mellitus, cystic fibrosis, hypercalcemia, celiac disease and hypothyroidism. People with myotonic and muscular dystrophy also suffer from constipation. • Medication: Constipation is seen as a side-effect left by number of medications. These medications include- diuretics, antihistamines, opioids, aluminum antacids, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and common codeine pain killers. • Psychological: Some people have the tendency to voluntarily withhold the stool which can be dangerous and leads to the constipation condition. Laziness, fear of pain or using public restroom may induce a person to withhold the stool leading to this condition. • Structural and functional abnormalities: Structural i.e. morphological, mechanical, anatomical causes have a great hand in developing the condition of constipation in people. Pelvic floor dysfunction, anal fissures, spinal cord lesions, colon cancer, Proctitis and Parkinsons can be the structural causes resulting in constipation. Neurological (functional) causes like escending perineum syndrome, Hirschsprung's disease and anismus also leads to constipation in people.
